The Forgotten Era, 1950 - 1965

LaDawri Coachcraft
Long Beach, California 1957-1965

This La Dawri Conquest was built around 1960.

I was living in North Wilkesboro NC when I purchased the new unfinished kit from Carpenter Automotive on Liberty St in Winston Salem NC somewhere around 1958.  After modifying a 1941 ford convertible frame, z’d, widened etc...  The body was mounted and the floor boards were built to fit the frame.  The first engine was a flathead ford with three deuces, Isky heads, Fenton cast iron headers, Isky cam and a Lincoln Zephyr tranny with closed torq tube driveshaft.  The second engine was a 1956 Nailhead 322 cu in buick century, mated to a manual shift 4 speed Automatic (Hydra Matic) with a homemade adapter and a pontiac rear end mounted to the old ford leaf spring suspension.  The windshield came from a 1956 chevy pickup, turned up side down.  This combination was awesome for it's time.  It would do an honest 98 mph at the drags.  I do not know the whereabouts of this car now.
My last name is Shepherd.
