1940-48 Ford-Mercury Sedan Trunk Hinges |
|
It looks like the difference
between 1940 Ford Sedan Trunk hinges and the 1941 though 1948 Ford Sedan
Trunk hinge is the rolled and pressed together arm. It appears
that the simpler U shaped arms started in 1941. It looks like the
right-angle bracket remained the same, however. The Ford coupe
used a different hinge. |
|
  |
These are 1940 Ford Sedan Trunk Hinges. Notice the rolled metal
arms versus the flat U on the hinges below. |

Conquest- It is inside the car under the windshield.
Not a 1940 Ford Vacuum Motor |
| The wiper motor set-up on the
picture is not Ford.. It looks like the one in my G2. which
I think is early 50's six volt Studebaker truck. Mopar had electric wipers
for most of the late 1940' and 1950's, too. Another very good system is the
Lucas assembly in the MGB. Hot Rodders have used them for years.. They are 12
volt. -- Hugh Nutting |

Jon, I remember a few vintage parts...
1. A windshield assembly that works
well and looks good on a Devin is the MGA It is very high
quality with chromed brass frame, and fits the Devin cowl curve
very well. I did one of these in 1961 because the Devin plexi-glass
factory windshields were not street legal in California.
2. The Byers look good with a
1953-1957 Corvette windshield assembly. The Road&Track feature
car has one. These are now available for the re-po early kit
Corvettes. A bit pricy! But nice.
3. Glasspar G2's have used the rear
window from a 1953- 1956 Lowey/Hawk coupes. It looks about like
the La Darwi windshield. These windows were used for
windshields in some Glasspar boats, too. Studebaker re-po parts
places still have the rubber molding.
Taillights:
1. Devin used the basic 1958 Impala
taillight molded in the rear quarters. I have seen some with
1946-48 Chevy taillights on Devins when vintage raced (gives
more light area) These were popular on Model A and B
roadsters. They are in re-po now too.
2. The light I used and thought
looked good for conservative customizing came from the Henry-J
(the round ones) The are made just like the 810/812 Cord lights
at about 3/4 the size. They are stainless steel and good
quality.
3. The Woodill used Willys Aero
rear lamps. Woody was a Willys Dealer.
Brake and Axels:
1. Lincoln V-12 Zephyr Bendix brakes
on Ford spindles were the preferred choice for early Rodders.
Because of common wheel bearings and king pin sizes later parts
will combine. With early F-1 Ford spindles you can install the
brakes from the 'baby' Lincolns of 1949-1951. Their shoes
interchange with the Buick 12 inch shoes. Ak Miller used this
set-up on his Pan-Am Olds powered 'T' in the early 1950's The
aluminum Alfin Buick drums can be fitted to Ford hubs with a
little machine work.
2. For the rear, 1/2 ton Ford and
Hudson brakes of the early 50s seem to interchange. They are 11" of Bendix design with self adjusters. A 12" Bendix of the same
design is found on the same period International 1/2 tons 110
and 1100 models. 1952 -53 Mercurys were of this design, too.
Their entire rear end was often used in Studillacs to gain more
brake area.
3. My Glasspar has a 1937-38 tubular
V-60 front axel, a popular light weight choice if the day. Ford
king pin bolts will fit in the 1935-36 Mopar tubular axels
allowing for Ford spindles and brakes.
Steering:
1. Some of the most preferred units
in the old days were; 1934 and 35 Hudson Gemmer. 1935-37 Mopar
Six cars Gemmer (what is in my G2) and Ross from International
pick-ups.
2. If you wish to build a Right Hand
Drive car the 1953-54 Studebaker Commander LHD Ross box works
great. I am currently building a 1940's 'Road Racing Rod'
chassis with pre-war Ford parts from 1935 to 1940. It is
planned to be RHD with a 1937 21 stud flathead.
3. There are some Ross
industrial/tractor steering gears that are mirror images of the
LHD car/truck boxes. I have one for my Railton LST, but as yet
have no idea of its original application.
4. If you are building a La Darwi
or Devin on a MGA chassis and want a RHD car. -- Use the rack
from a Morris Minor. Ol'Yellar II was built this way.
Misc: The windshield wiper set-up
in the First Series (yellow) Wildfire is the same as my G2.
Think it is early 50's Studebaker.
Cheers Hugh Nutting
